The beginnings of sustainable construction in Portugal
Since the 1990s, Portugal has been guiding the construction sector towards sustainability.
This progress is seen both through the implementation of regulations — particularly those that came into effect in 1990 and 1998 (see more details in the Portuguese regulatory framework) — and through the emergence of organizations, associations, and environmental assessment systems.
Three environmental certification systems adapted to the national reality have been created: LiderA, SBToolPT, and Domus Natura.

There are also organizations dedicated to promoting sustainability in the construction industry, such as iiSBE (International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment) — an international association whose purpose is to encourage practices and policies related to sustainable construction.
Another important milestone is the Sustainable Construction Portal, launched in 2010, aimed at informing and raising awareness among professionals and individuals about good practices of sustainable construction in Portugal.
